How to Say “Left” in Spanish

Spanish Vocabulary 12 min read Updated 15 October 2026

“Left” in Spanish depends on which “left” you mean. For the direction or side, it is izquierda (noun) and izquierdo / izquierda (adjective): gira a la izquierda (turn left), el pie izquierdo (the left foot), la mano izquierda (the left hand). For “left” as the past of leave, Spanish uses a verb instead: salió or se fue (he left), dejé (I left something), and queda for what is left over: no queda leche (there’s no milk left).

English Spanish Example
turn left gira / dobla a la izquierda Gira a la izquierda en el semáforo.
on the left a la izquierda La farmacia está a la izquierda.
left (adjective, masculine) izquierdo Me duele el ojo izquierdo.
left (adjective, feminine) izquierda Levanta la mano izquierda.
left-handed zurdo / zurda Mi hermana es zurda.
he/she left (went away) se fue / salió Se fue a las seis. Salió de la oficina.
I left (something somewhere) dejé Dejé las llaves en el coche.
left over, remaining quedar ¿Queda pan? Solo quedan dos.
the political left la izquierda Es un partido de izquierda.

Izquierdo or izquierda? The adjective agrees

As an adjective, “left” agrees with the noun in gender and number, like most Spanish adjectives, and it goes after the noun:

  • el pie izquierdo (the left foot), los zapatos izquierdos
  • la mano izquierda (the left hand), las ventanas izquierdas
  • el carril izquierdo (the left lane)
  • el ala izquierda (the left wing): ala is feminine, but takes el in the singular because it starts with a stressed “a”.

As a noun meaning “the left side” or “the left direction”, it is always feminine: la izquierda. That is why you say a la izquierda even when the thing you are talking about is masculine: El banco está a la izquierda.

With things that have a side, Spanish often says el lado izquierdo (the left side): el lado izquierdo de la calle, el lado izquierdo del cerebro. It is more natural than “la izquierda de la calle” in most sentences.

Giving directions: a la izquierda

  • Gira / dobla a la izquierda. Turn left. (Doblar is very common in Latin America; girar everywhere.)
  • Está a la izquierda. It’s on the left.
  • A la izquierda de la farmacia. To the left of the pharmacy.
  • A mano izquierda. On the left-hand side. Common in directions in Spain: La segunda calle a mano izquierda.
  • Sigue por la izquierda. Keep to the left.
  • Todo recto y luego a la izquierda. Straight ahead and then left.

A la izquierda is an adverbial phrase; izquierda on its own is not an adverb. You cannot say “gira izquierda”.

“Left” as the past of “leave”

If you mean that someone went away or that something was left somewhere, izquierda is the wrong word. Choose the verb by meaning:

Meaning Spanish Example
went out of a place salir (salió) Salió del cine a las diez. (She left the cinema at ten.)
went away irse (se fue) Ya se fueron. (They’ve already left.)
put or forgot something somewhere dejar (dejé) Dejé el móvil en casa. (I left my phone at home.)
left a person or a job dejar (dejó) Dejó su trabajo en mayo. (He left his job in May.)
a train, bus or plane departed salir (salió) El tren salió a tiempo.

“Left” meaning remaining: quedar

For what remains, Spanish uses quedar, which agrees with the thing that is left:

  • ¿Queda café? Is there any coffee left?
  • Solo quedan tres entradas. There are only three tickets left.
  • Me quedan diez euros. I have ten euros left.
  • Nos quedan dos días. We have two days left.
  • Las sobras = leftovers (food).

Expressions with izquierdo and izquierda

  • Levantarse con el pie izquierdo: to get up on the wrong side of the bed (to start the day badly).
  • Tener mano izquierda: to be tactful, good at handling delicate situations. Para ese puesto hace falta mucha mano izquierda.
  • Ser de izquierda(s): to be left-wing. De izquierdas is usual in Spain, de izquierda in much of Latin America.
  • Zurdo / zurda: left-handed (person). Es zurdo, not “es izquierdo”.
  • Por la izquierda: on the left (side of the road): En el Reino Unido se conduce por la izquierda.
