Defuse vs Diffuse: Which One Do You Need?
To defuse is to remove danger. To diffuse is to spread out.
He defused the argument. Light diffused through the glass.
The test that settles it
Look for the fuse. Defuse takes the fuse out of a bomb, or out of a situation.
“___ the tension” → make it safe, so defuse.
“heat ___ through the room” → spread, so diffused.
Defuse: to make safe
Literally to remove the fuse from an explosive; figuratively to calm a dangerous situation. Always a verb.

A joke defused the atmosphere.
Talks aimed at defusing the crisis.
Swap in calm or make safe. If it works, defuse.
Diffuse: to spread, or spread out
As a verb, to scatter in every direction. As an adjective, spread thin — and of writing, unfocused.
The scent diffused quickly.
A diffuse glow from the window.
His argument was diffuse and hard to follow.
Swap in spread out. If it works, diffuse.
Side by side
| Defuse | Diffuse |

The exception
Diffuse works as an adjective; defuse never does. So a diffuse light is possible and a defuse light is not.
