Amoral vs Immoral: Which One Do You Need?
Immoral breaks a moral rule. Amoral stands outside morality altogether.

The test that settles it
Ask whether the thing is capable of knowing right from wrong. If it is and it chose wrong, that is immoral. If the question does not apply, that is amoral.
“He lied for profit — ___” → he knew better, so immoral.
“Markets are ___” → a market has no morals to break, so amoral.
The a- prefix means without, as in atypical or asymmetric. The im- prefix means not, as in impossible.
Immoral: morally wrong
It judges an action or a person against a standard and finds them in breach. The word carries condemnation.
It would be immoral to keep the money.
They were accused of immoral conduct.
An immoral way to treat staff.

Amoral: outside morality
It says the moral question does not arise — because the thing has no moral sense, or because it operates on other criteria entirely. It is a description, not an accusation.
Machines are amoral; the people who build them are not.

The exceptions
Calling a person amoral is a strong and unusual claim — it says they have no moral sense at all, not that they behaved badly.
Most of the time when people reach for amoral about a person, immoral or unethical is what they mean.
Philosophers sometimes prefer nonmoral for things the moral question simply does not touch, keeping amoral for agents who could have a moral sense but do not.
