Spanish: Words Starting with “R”
Common Spanish words that start with R include rojo (red), rápido (fast), río (river), ropa (clothes), reloj (watch, clock), regalo (gift), recordar (to remember) and reír (to laugh). One rule matters more than any list: an R at the start of a Spanish word is always rolled, exactly like the RR in perro. So rosa sounds like “rrrosa”, never like the English R in “rose”.
How to say the R at the start of a word
Spanish has two R sounds:
- Tap (one quick flick of the tongue behind the top teeth, like the “tt” in American “butter”): a single R between vowels or after a consonant other than L, N, S. pero (but), caro (expensive), tres (three).
- Trill (several fast flicks, the rolled R): written RR between vowels, and also a single R at the start of a word or after L, N or S. perro (dog), rojo, alrededor (around), Enrique, Israel.
Every word on this page starts with the trill. That is why no Spanish word starts with “rr” in writing: the single R already gives the rolled sound. (If you are looking for words with rr inside them, see Spanish words with RR.)
If you can’t roll yet, practise the tap first: say American “butter” or “pot of tea” quickly and feel the tongue flick. Then repeat the flick several times on one breath, keeping the tongue relaxed. A soft tap at the start of rojo is understood; an English R is the sound that marks you as a beginner.

Quick answers
Are there Spanish words that start with RR?
No. A word-initial R is already trilled, so it is written with one R. RR only appears between vowels: perro, carro, tierra.
Why is the R in Enrique rolled?
Because it follows N. After L, N and S, a single R is trilled: alrededor, honra, Israel.
What are easy Spanish words that start with R for kids?
Short, concrete words work best: rojo (red), rana (frog), ratón (mouse), rosa (rose), río (river), rey (king), regalo (gift) and reloj (clock). Each one also practises the rolled R.
Is the R in pero and perro the same?
No, and the difference changes the meaning. Pero (but) has a single tap; perro (dog) has a trill. The same pair exists in caro (expensive) / carro (car) and coro (choir) / corro (I run).
What is a long Spanish word that starts with R?
Responsabilidad (responsibility) and reconocimiento (recognition) are common examples.
