Its vs It’s: Which One Do You Need?
It’s is short for it is or it has. Its means belonging to it.
It’s raining. The dog wagged its tail.
The test that settles it
Read the sentence with it is in place of the word. If it still makes sense, you want the apostrophe.
“___ been a long day” → it has been works, so it’s.
“The company changed ___ name” → it is name is nonsense, so its.
The apostrophe is standing in for a missing letter, not showing possession. That is the whole rule.
It’s: a contraction
Two words squeezed into one. The apostrophe marks where a letter has been removed — the i of is, or the ha of has.
It’s colder than yesterday.
It’s been three weeks.
I think it’s going to work.
Expand it. If it is or it has fits, keep the apostrophe.
Its: possessive
Shows that something belongs to the thing already mentioned. It behaves exactly like his and her, and like them it takes no apostrophe.
The tree has lost its leaves.
Every argument has its weak point.
The city is known for its bridges.
Swap in his. If the sentence still works grammatically, use its.

The exception
Nouns show possession with an apostrophe — the dog’s bowl. Pronouns do not: his, hers, ours, theirs, yours, its. None of them takes one.
So the apostrophe in it’s can only ever mean a contraction.
